Most people think of diamonds as colourless, however truly colourless diamonds are very rare. Most diamonds are nearly colourless with tints of yellow or brown.

The most commonly purchased diamond is known as a "white" diamond, which has an H or better colour - that is, colours between D and H.

The colour difference between D, E and F colours is only very subtle, so subtle that it can be difficult for diamond graders to judge the differences. The colour difference between G and H and colours below starts to become greater.

A diamond's clarity is determined by how free it is from "inclusions" - small, generally microscopic imperfections that make each diamond unique.

Diamond clarity grades are given by examining very minute details of the diamond at 10x magnification.

It is rare to find diamonds without inclusions.

The inclusions in VVS, VS and SI claraties may not be seen by the naked eye, making each of these clarities particularly desirable for engagement rings.

Fluorescence is the effect ultraviolet (UV) light has on a diamond. UV light is strongest outside on a sunny day or under florescent lighting.

When UV light strikes a diamond with fluorescence, it will emit a blue glow ranging from very faint to very strong. The minerals boron and nitrogen are the source of fluorescence.

Does fluorescence matter?
The results of a 1997 GIA study on the effect of ultraviolet fluorescence on a diamond's appearance showed that "strong or even very strong blue fluorescence can improve appearance rather than detract from it, especially in diamonds with faint yellow body colour." The study also stated that - "For the average observer, meant to represent the jewellery buying public, no systematic effects of fluorescence were detected. Even the experienced observers did not consistently agree on the effects of fluorescence from one stone to the next."

In other words, for the average observer, fluorescence made no difference and experienced/trained observers did not agree on the influence of fluorescence.

Rating fluorescence

• None, nil, negligible = no fluorescence, no influence on colour
• Faint, slight = weak fluorescence, no significant influence on colour (barely perceptible)
• Medium = average fluorescence, small influence
• Strong, Very Strong = strong influence, substantial colour influence

The recommended girdle has a thickness from 1% to 5%.

A girdle of less then 1% thickness is not recommended because there is a possibility of breaking. Similarly, a thickness of greater then 5% is not recommended because it lessens the light reflection.

The culet is the point on the bottom of the diamond. It is often faceted to remove the sharp point and to protect it from chipping. Usually this facet is very small and nearly impossible to see.

Large culets are undesirable because the culet facet may be visible to the naked eye. A large culet may also indicate that the culet has been chipped or broken off.
